Alternative Paths to Learning: Higher Education Isn’t The Only Way


In 2016, education is at a premium. The value of having a degree beyond a high school diploma can have a significant impact in your career earning potential. But what if school just isn’t your thing? Perhaps you don’t like the classroom or maybe you don’t want to go into debt to pay for a degree. The good news is that while building a great career does take time, not every life path requires a traditional degree. Below are some alternatives to higher education for those of us whose passions lead us in different directions.

Open A Small Business

Being an entrepreneur is tough, and there is a certain amount of risk involved in opening your own business. But that doesn’t mean you can’t do it. Sustained effort is needed to build a business to the point where it pays the bills. If you have a passion or a special expertise, you can use that as a foundation to build your own business. Some small business options: consulting firms, stores, restaurants/cafes. Start small by developing your business concept, learn all you can about the kind of business you want to open and talk to your local Small Business Development Center about writing a business plan.
