Latina actress Michelle Rodriguez was born in Bexar County, Texas to a Dominican mother and a Puerto Rican father. Rodriquez is known for playing mujeres fuertes: Her first major success came in the 2000 movie Girlfight, where she played a female boxer. Since then, she has appeared in Avatar and Machete, as well as in the long-running TV show Lost–but she is probably best known for her role as Letty Ortiz in the Fast and the Furious movies, which features breathtaking car chases and other action scenes. The seventh in the franchise, which also stars Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, and the late Paul Walker, is due for a 2015 release under the name Furious 7.
The first The Fast and the Furious movie came out in 2001 and featured a group of street racers who are suspected of stealing expensive electronic equipment. Rodriguez’s character starts the franchise as the girlfriend of the group’s leader, Dominic, played by Vin Diesel. She is a skilled racecar driver in her own right.
Rodriquez did not appear in the next two films, but did reprise her role as Letty in the fourth movie, 2009’s Fast and Furious. The character is presumed to have been killed in the movie by Domenic and her friends, but was, in fact, hospitalized with amnesia. Letty next appeared in the sixth movie, Fast Six, in which Domenic and his crew are recruited by FBI agent Luke Hobbs, played by Dwayne Johnson, to bring down Shaw and his criminal gang. The character is rescued from death by Dominic and rejoins her old crew, but still lacks a memory of her former life.
Letty will return in Furious 7 in which a new character named Ian Shaw will attempt to exact revenge against Dominic and his crew for the death of his brother Owen in Fast Six.
