Hola Awards 2015 Honor Actor Benicio Del Toro

Hola Awards - Del ToroTake a moment and conjure up an image of your October calendar. Is Monday the 12th ringing a bell? Any birthdays coming up?

No? Good. That means your schedule is clear to hop on a JetBlue Airways flight to New York City, check in to the Millenium Hilton Hotel, and attend the annual awards ceremony put on by the Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors (HOLA) 6pm at The Battery Gardens. (Wait, what? Why are you laughing? I guess you can also just post up on your couch with some friends and a Hibiscus Margarita and watch Orange is the New Black. Practically the same thing.)

Here’s what’s going down at HOLA Awards 2015:

Academy Award winners Benicio Del Toro and Alexander Dinelaris are being honored.

Del Toro, who won an Academy Award for his role in Traffic, will receive the 2015 Raúl Juliá HOLA Founders Award. You can check him out in Che, The Usual Suspects, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Escobar: Paradise Lost, or upcoming films The Little Prince, Sicario, Weightless, and A Perfect Day.

HOLA and R.Evolución Latina are recognizing Dinelaris for inspiring and giving back to the Latino community with the Dare To Go Beyond Award. The director/playwright/producer wrote the Oscar-winning Birdman screenplay and the book behind the Gloria and Emilio Estefan musical On Your Feet!.

So are television stars Selenis Leyva, Andrea Navedo, Dascha Polanco, and Marisa Ramírez.

Leyva plays Gloria Mendoza on Orange is the New Black. She’s getting the 2015 José Ferrer HOLA Tespis Award.

Navedo plays Xiomara Villanueva in Jane the Virgin. She’s being honored with the 2015 HOLA Elizabeth Peña Breakthrough Artist Award.

Polanco, who plays Dayanara “Daya” Díaz in Orange is the New Black and Jackie in upcoming film Joy (which looks awesome and kind of insane)

will be given the HOLA Inovadora Award. Ramírez plays Detective María Báez in Blue Bloods and will receive the HOLA Excellence in Television Award.

Also actor Francisco Gattorno and TV journalist Adriana Vargas.

Gattorno appears in Univision’s Muchacha italiana viene a casarse and is receiving the HOLA Excellence in the Telenovela Genre Award.

News anchor “Noticiero Univision 41” for WXTV New York, Vargas will be honored with the 2015 HOLA Excellence in Media Award.

Among 2014 HOLA award recipients were Héctor Elizondo and Bianca Marroquín.

Anna Cherry is a writer and editor in New York City. She tweets at @unacereza.
