At the age of 22 years old, Sofia Arana from San Juan, Puerto Rico, set a record as the youngest Latin fashion designer to participate in the award-winning international three-day runway event, the Nolcha Fashion Week. The Spring/Summer 2015 Collection was presented during the New York Fashion Week in September, 2014.
This independent fashion designer runway show is the perfect platform for coveted exposure by any independent up-and-coming designer who wants to enter the U.S. market. Fashion Week is geared toward the discovery and promotion of new and ambitious talent: For six years, the event has allowed more than 200 designers from throughout the world show their offerings, and gain exposure by having well-known models wear their looks.
The debut of Sofia’s high-end luxury pieces brand occurred after extensive sales in exclusive Puerto Rican boutiques of her trendy and yet classic sophisticated fashions. Meant for the contemporary woman who is very aware of and interested in fashion movements, her collection uses muted tones in cotton and lace; her clothes are often inspired by a flower garden. The elegant, whimsical clothing also has a vintage vibe, and sometimes makes use of metallic textiles and silk chiffon in vibrant colors.
During her very early years, Sofia was attracted to arts and crafts and always knew that she wanted to become a fashion designer. She spent a great deal of time sketching dresses in her notebook, and started sewing lessons and the necessary formal fashion design education at the age of 16 at Puerto Rico’s Carlota Alfaro College. Carlota Alfaro herself became Sofia’s mentor and has guided her through the program.
In addition to her busy life as a fashion designer, Sofia studies Art History at the University of Puerto Rico—congrats to this young, inspiring Latina on all she has been able to do so far. We can’t wait to see what’s next from Ms. Arana! Follow her on Facebook or visit her website to learn more about this season’s fashion trends.
