Latinas have made waves in the field of science, alongside those that may have had more attention or adulation placed upon them. We have decided to turn the spotlight back on these extraordinary women and their achievements. The following are seven Latina scientists that have contributed greatly to the scientific world.

Mexican-American Ellen Ochoa was the first Latina to be chosen as an astronaut, as well as the first Latina in space. The engineer has been on four NASA missions, and is co-inventor on three patents dealing with optics, object recognition, and image processing. Ochoa is also the second woman, and first Latina, to become Director of NASA’s Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center.
