As we wrap up the año—I know, already—we wanted to take a look back at the awesome Latinas who made headlines. Unfortunately, I did not make the list this time, but I guess that’s more motivation to get started on (or at least come up with) those New Year’s resolutions so that I have a shot next year? Actress Gina Rodriguez
The Jane the Virgin actress has used her celebrity status to do more than just post viral tweets. She supports many philanthropic efforts, including the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, the National Bullying Prevention Center, and empowering women in Clinique’s Difference Maker campaign. To combat #OscarsSoWhite earlier this year, Rodriguez launched “Movement Mondays” on her Instagram to help make Hollywood more diverse and recognize Latinos in big screen roles. The current season of Jane the Virgin certainly does not shy away from controversial topics in the Latina community. And just earlier this week, Rodriguez was the only Latina to be nominated for a Golden Globe.
