Summer Fruit Salsa Recipe: Strawberry Pico de Gallo

Strawberry Pico de Gallo

  • 1 lb strawberries (about 2 ½ cups of chopped strawberries)
  • ½ cup minced purple onion
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • 1 serrano chile, seeded, deveined, stemmed and minced
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • ¼ cup chopped cilantro
  • Tortilla chips to serve


  1. Wash and hull the strawberries, finely chop and add to a bowl. Add the purple onion and the lemon juice. Mix carefully.
  2. Add the chile serrano, the sea salt and the cilantro. Mix and check for seasoning. Adjust if necessary.
  3. Serve on a bowl and eat with corn tortilla chips.


This strawberry pico de gallo salsa is best eaten immediately.
The best way to wash strawberries is by running them under cold water for a few minutes. It’s best to always use organic strawberries. Conventional strawberries are under the EWG list of produce with more pesticides.

It is almost summer and with summer come BBQs and other get-togethers and lots of fresh food. summer is my favorite time of the year— I love to relax, I love the weather, I enjoy and the simple and delicious way we eat.

I don’t know why at the end of every season I feel like I haven’t had enough time to try all the dishes I want to. I don’t like it when winter is coming to an end and I still have a huge list of  stews and soups I want to try and prepare.  The same happens during the fall and during spring. I feel I’m never done enjoying all the produce that comes with each season. This is why, even though we’re still in spring, I’m starting early with summer food, being that this is my favorite time of the year and I have so many recipes I want to try.

This easy strawberry salsa has been in my list for a while, and when I tried it I fell in love immediately with it. It is perfect with chips or as a finishing topping for grilled fish. It is the kind of salsa that everybody likes: mild, fresh and very different from the traditional pico de gallo. The trick to make this strawberry pico de gallo irresistible is to use firm strawberries and to really mince the chile serrano. Strawberries have a very mild flavor that you do not want to over power with the spiciness of the chile serrano. The ideal is for the two flavor to compliment one another.
