Based off the New York Times bestselling science fiction series, last year’s The Maze Runner starred Latina actress Kaya Scodelario. Not only is Kaya Scodelario returning this year, but Latina co-stars Nathalie Emmanuel and Rosa Salazar are joining her in Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials. That’s every top-billed lady in the cast! Hip Latina is bringing you the must-know heritage, career, and character basics for these three women.
Nathalie Emmanuel is a multiracial English actress with a Dominican mother. She’s best known for her role as Missandei in Game of Thrones, but you may also have seen her in Furious 7 earlier this year. Clearly, action is her forte. Nathalie is coming onboard the second Maze Runner movie as Harriet. The first movie was centered around a group of boys held captive in a maze for an mysterious experiment. The Scorch Trials reveals there were other mazes, and Harriet leads an all-girls group. Now boys and girls must brave the dystopian world outside the mazes together.
Rosa Salazar is becoming a recognizable face in YA science fiction. Earlier this year, the Canadian Latina had a major role in Insurgent, the second movie in the Divergent series. Before then, you may have seen her in the first season of American Horror Story. Now she’s playing a new character in the Maze Runner series: Brenda. Brenda was raised in the harsh landscape that the others are just discovering. It’s made her a very “armored” person who lives in the moment, according to Rosa.
Last but not least is the leading lady of the entire Maze Runner series, the English Kaya Scodelario. Raised by her mother, a Brazilian immigrant, Kaya grew up speaking Brazilian Portuguese and took her mother’s surname.
Her acting debut was in the award-showered Moon, but you’re just as likely to know Kaya from the British series Skins—or from the first Maze Runner movie. In The Scorch Trials, she continues her role as Teresa. She’s the sole female in the boy’s group, a lonely outsider with different goals from the others. Teresa’s compelling presence makes her a beloved character among fans.
Kaya’s adding another blockbuster franchise to her repertoire soon: She’s already been confirmed as a cast member in the next Pirates of Caribbean movie. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials is in theaters now, and you don’t want to miss this trio of Latinas giving their very best for the big screen.
