Donald Trump Doesn’t Think Puerto Rico Is Part of the United States

President Donald Trump is attacking Puerto Rico once again, and this time he is saying that Puerto Rico is “complaining” about the lack of relief funds and also erroneously tweeting that the island is not part of the U.S.

This morning the president tweeted, “Puerto Rico got 91 Billion Dollars for the hurricane, more money than has ever been gotten for a hurricane before, & all their local politicians do is complain & ask for more money. The pols are grossly incompetent, spend the money foolishly or corruptly, & only take from USA.”

It’s a proven fact that Trump lies all the time, but his latest tweets about Puerto Rico aren’t just intentionally misleading, it also seems that the President might not truly understand that Puerto Rico is a part of the United States. What exactly does Puerto Rico take from the United States? The island nation sorely lacks relief funds, and they are not “taking” anything from their own country. The president is also mistaken about the relief that our government provided these American citizens because Hurricane Maria caused $90 billion in just damages, not including humanitarian aid we are pretty much responsible for providing given that Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the United States. We’ve been exploiting the island for over 100 years for everything from natural resources to human capital and have given very little back in terms of aid and opportunity for its citizens.

He went on to tweet, “The best thing that ever happened to Puerto Rico is President Donald J. Trump. So many wonderful people, but with such bad Island leadership and with so much money wasted. Cannot continue to hurt our Farmers and States with these massive payments, and so little appreciation!”

People on social media did not allow the president to get away with his deception and inability to realize by hurting Puerto Rico, he is hurting American citizens.

Journalist Soledad O’Brien tweeted, “Puerto Rico IS the USA. Ahhh… the deep stupidity of the President of the United States.” @Leighanan_Sidhe tweeted, “1. PUERTO RICO IS THE USA. 2. We can’t afford their aid but you want BILLIONS for a wall? 3. Yes funds are being severely mismanaged by YOU. 4. Puerto Ricans are Americans and it’s your duty to help them as much as anywhere else in the usa.” Christian Trinidad‏ tweeted, “Puerto Rico is the USA. Puerto Ricans are Americans. Puerto Rico pays taxes to the U.S. Puerto Rico deserves all the aid that they need. Puerto Rican lives are just as valuable as American lives. #PuertoRico.”

Trump also attacked San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz on Twitter last night, calling her incompetent. She responded by tweeting, “Pres Trump continues to embarrass himself & the Office he holds. He is unhinged & thus lies about the $ received by PR. HE KNOWS HIS RESPONSE was inefficient [sic] at best. He can huff & puff all he wants but he cannot escape the death of 3,000 on his watch. SHAME ON YOU!” Cruz tweeted.” She added, “Mr. President I am right here ready to call you on every lie, every hypocrisy and every ill-fated action against the people of Puerto Rico. My voice and the voices of the people of Puerto Rico will continue to unmask your insensitive [sic], incapable & vindictive ways. SHAME ON YOU!”

Democrat Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer wrote an op-ed for the New York Daily News and said that the Trump Administration had not given Puerto Rico $20 billion that they promised.
