I hope we can all agree that J.Lo deserves an honorary Latin Grammy just for singing with Marc Anthony on stage and then managing to offer some congratulatory words as she awarded him Person of the Year. My living room joined in full force with the crowd in shouting, “BESO! BESO! BESO!,” as the tense passion built up between the (ex?) power couple on stage.
After getting over that minor distraction, we wanted to share songs from our favorite #Women2Watch who took home Latin Grammy’s that night.
Julieta Venegas – “Algo Sucede”
Julieta’s signature sound will never get old for me. I’ll always think back to 11th grade Spanish class when I discovered the hit song “Lento.” Her latest album, Algo Sucede, earned her the Latin Grammy for Best Pop/Rock Album. Check out the title song here:
Next – Carla MorrisonCarla Morrison – “Vez Primera”
Mexican American singer-songwriter Carla Morrison brought home the award for Best Alternative Song. The video for “Vez Primera” is almost as hypnotizing and calming as the song itself. Check it out for a break from the usual reggaetón on the radio:
Next – Jesse & JoyJesse & Joy – “Me Soltaste”
The Mexican pop duo owned the stage as they performed “Me Soltaste” live. The song appears on their album Un Besito Más, which earned them Best Contemporary Pop Vocal Album. Watch the live performance here:
Next – Shakira y Carlos VivesShakira y Carlos Vives – “La Bicicleta”
¡VIVA COLOMBIA! We saved the best for almost last. “La Bicicleta” from Carlos Vives and Shakira won both Song and Record of the Year, beating other big hits from Enrique Iglesias, Wisin, and Laura Pausini. We cheered them on as they won the award, but the only disappointment was that Shakira wasn’t actually there to give an acceptance speech! Shakira, please consider this a personal invitation from HipLatina to join us next time. Although Carlos Vives performed “La Bicicleta” live, it didn’t have quite the same ritmo without Shakira. Here’s the original music video:
Next – Niña PastoriNiña Pastori – “Ámame Como Soy”
Why not switch things up with some flamenco? Ámame Como Soy won the award for Best Flamenco Album. Enjoy the title track here, which should make you want to get on the floor and bailar.
