AMAs 2019: The Fiercest Fashion Looks of the Night
Last night, music stars shined at the 2019 American Music Awards in Los Angeles
Last night, music stars shined at the 2019 American Music Awards in Los Angeles. The night wasn’t all about the awards, either. The real show happened on stage and on the red carpet. There was a slew of incredible performances by legendary singers including Toni Braxton, who sang “Un-break My Heart,” Shania Twain, who did a medley of her biggest hits, and Christina Aguilera, who performed “Fall On Me.”
The show kicked off stunningly with a performance by Selena Gomez, who hadn’t performed at the AMAs in two years. Gomez walked out on stage boldly and sang her first single of the year “Lose You To Love Me.” Yes, there was chatter of the quality of her singing on social media, but as we know, haters are gonna hate. Thankfully, however, she had her famous gal pals — Taylor Swift and Halsey — cheering her on in the front row as Gomez transitioned from her sullen song to her new dance single, “Look At Her Now.”
As far as the winners are concerned, our girl Cardi B took home Favorite Artist — Rap/Hip-Hop, Collaboration of the Year went to Camila Cabello and her man Shawn Mendes, Favorite Song — Rap/Hip-Hop went to Lil Nas X for his song “Old Town Road” with Billy Ray Cyrus. Beyoncé took home Favorite Female Artist — Soul/R&B award, and J Balvin won Favorite Artist— Latin, among many other winners.
Ciara, who served as host of the AMAs, had a total of nine outfit changes during the evening, but her red-carpet look was our top favorite. Speaking of, let’s get right to it. There were so many incredible fashion looks last night, and we loved that each star showed off where they are right now by expressing themselves so powerfully. Some, of course, were more unique than others, so here’s a roundup of the ones that shined the brightest.

Selena Gomez
Look at her now. 🔥 @SelenaGomez is STUNNING in @Versace! pic.twitter.com/wE6Fz84a4u

This was her night. Selena Gomez had so much to prove, but she left all of that pressure on the red carpet. The star has been around this business for a minute, so she doesn’t owe us anything, but she still brought her A-game anyway. She wore a gorgeous short neon green Versace number that accentuated her curves, and it wrapped around her like a gift. Well, a gift to us no less. Her short new hair cut perfected the look as did her fierce makeup. We love seeing Gomez come into her own as a 27-year-old. With this number, she is showing us how much she’s evolved as a singer and a trendsetter. There’s a reason why she has more than 162 million followers on Instagram.

Camila Cabello

Okay, Rapunzel. Camila Cabello is in love and is proving it through her fashion. The 22-year-old singer looked like a princess on the red carpet in a long gold gown that she paired with a long flowing braid. But this fashion look makes so much sense. Cabello is a princess, after all. She’s slated to be Cinderella in the new Disney adaptation of the iconic fairytale and with her man by her side, she’s got her prince, and she’s good to go.

Lizzo

Fresh off the heels of her Vogue cover, Lizzo had to rock the red carpet because she’s officially a fashion queen now and she did not disappoint. The singer wore an orange, short, Valentino dress. Her zero fucks move wasn’t the dress, but her tiny little purse. Her bite-sized purse had everyone on social media talking because, what a statement! We also loved her retro hairstyle. It was all very ’50s and we are here for it.

If there’s anyone who’s going to blow everyone out of the water on the red carpet — or anywhere for that matter — it has to be Mr. Billy Porter. The Pose star came through once again with an elaborate outfit that left us with our mouths completely open. He wore a white Thom Browne suit and topped it off with a hat designed by Stephen Jones and an Oscar Heyman & Brothers ring, ABC News reports. His look was, of course, a statement. He tweeted, “I’m wearing hints of red, white, and blue because I’m an American. And this is what we look like.” Damn, yes.

As we noted earlier, the host of this year’s American Music Awards was Ciara who had a total of nine outfit changes. Impressive, right? But her red carpet look was truly fashion-forward. Her blue blazer and matching slacks were big and drapey and very cool. The statement jewelry was even more puzzling but in a good way because it doubled as body armor. It was all very insane, but that’s why we love the red carpet because we hate boring fashion.

The veteran singer is always touch and go when it comes to her fashion sense. We never know what she’s going to contribute to the fashion dialogue. And whether you like it or not, she’s amazing about getting people’s attention. She definitely did that with this white Cleopatra-like gown that included a head drape and large ’80s belt. It wasn’t everyone’s favorite, in fact, some people hated it, but as we said, we hate boring. She’s brought a fierce look and we respect her for it.

Lil Nas X

Neon green seemed to be the color of the night, and we can thank Lil Nas X for that. The young rapper who had one of the biggest singles of the year came in blazing with his neon green suit and animal print shirt and gloves. The performer, who is the first openly gay rapper ever to be nominated for a Grammy, was lit on the red carpet. With his loud suit, he is making no apologies for who he is and what he loves to wear. We can’t wait to see how his fashion will evolve.
