La Llorona is an iconic figure in Latin American folklore and despite the espooky nature of her infamy, she is now being honored with a Barbie in her likeness. For the first time in Mattel history, the brand released a La Llorona Barbie in honor of Dia de Muertos and and the doll quickly sold out. La Llorona wears a white ensemble with a corset bodice and a layered lace skirt with lace sleeves and a veil that add to the ghostly design. Her hands, holding a melting candle, and her face have a skeletal design and she dons a headdress of black roses with La Catrina-style makeup and white dangly earrings. It was designed by Javi Meabe, who also designs the annual Dia de Muertos dolls, with Charis Ceniseroz as the packaging designer. The box adds to the thematic elements with a gloomy scene in a blend of blues and purples.
“Thank you so much to everyone who reached out today with love and excitement for the Día De Muertos Llorona Barbie, Maebe wrote in an Instagram caption. “This was truly a passion project, and I’m so grateful I got the chance to work on something that means so much to me.”
Last month, Mattel revealed their annual Día de Muertos Barbie and Ken dolls, and they feature bold calavera face paint and colorful designs that honor the iconic cempasúchil flower and its significance and symbolism in the holiday’s celebrations. Designed by Ari Sarinana, both dolls are pictured in a Día de Muertos outdoor altar-like setting and feature vibrant calavera-style makeup and cempasúchil details on their outfits.
“I’m really proud to be part of a brand like Barbie that celebrates culture, heritage, stories, and traditions so many of us grew up with and continue to pass down,” Maebe added in his Instagram post. “Being part of the Día De Muertos segment has opened doors I never imagined. It’s connected me to new people, allowed me to hear their stories, and given me the chance to share a bit of myself through every doll I’ve designed.”
The doll, which retails for $110, is sold out though it may be available through online retailers, as well as select stores in Latin America.
