Iconic hip hop group Cypress Hill is about to make history as the first Latinx hip hop group to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will honor Cypress Hill with the 2,660th star during the ceremony on April 18 with special appearances by comedian George Lopez and rapper Xzibit, who is in the group Serial Killers with member B-Real.
Cypress Hill members Senen “Sen Dog” Reyes, Lawrence “DJ Muggs” Muggerud, Louis “B-Real” Freese and Eric “Bobo” Correa are of Cuban, Puerto Rican, and Mexican descent.
The event is not far from South Gate, where they formed almost 30 years ago and which is home to the street that provided the inspiration for their group name. They released their eponymous debut album in 1991 which went on to sell 2 million copies. Their massively successful track “Insane in the Brain” was released in 1993 as part of their chart topping album Black Sunday and reached #1 in the rap charts and #19 on the Billboard Hot 100. They’ve released nine albums and have collaborated with artists including Eminem and Everlast.
They’ll be performing songs off their latest album Elephants On Acid, released last year and produced entirely by DJ Muggs, at the legendary nightclub Whiskey A Go Go in West Hollywood the night of the ceremony.
They’ve already made history as the first Latinx hip hop group to have platinum and multi-platinum albums with more than 20 million albums sold worldwide.
“We are proud to honor the first Latino American hip hop recording group,” said Ana Martinez, producer of the Hollywood Walk of Fame said in a press release. “They have been successful as a group for three decades and we know they will continue their success for many years to come.”
The Grammy-nominated group joins rapper Pitbull, who received his star in 2016, as well as other Latinx musicians including Ricky Martin, Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, and Selena on the famed sidewalk.
Cypress Hill is well known for their musical contributions to the hip hop world throughout the span of their career with Cuban-Puerto Rican rapper Fat Joe stating they were one of the first Latinx involved in the early stages of West Coast rap.
Apart from working on their music, the members are currently planning a documentary film taking a look back at the group’s history and their cultural impact. The trailer includes a call for financial support for the documentary which already exceeded its goal receiving more than $38K in funding.
The induction ceremony will take place this Thursday at 11:30 a.m. PST at 6201 Hollywood Boulevard in front of the Green Leaf restaurant in Eastown and will be live-streamed exclusively on the Walk of Fame website.
