Jennifer Lopez is an actress, singer, dancer, producer, and all-around fierce Boricua star and now she can add bonafide fashion icon to the list.
She’ll be receiving the Fashion Icon Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) at the 2019 CFDA Fashion Awards June 3 at New York’s Brooklyn Museum. She is the first Latina to receive this award.
She joins the ranks of previous recipients including Beyoncé Knowles, Pharrell Williams, and Rihanna who wore a see-through Swarovski crystal dress to accept her award.
“Jennifer Lopez’s style is bold, uninhibited, and always memorable,” Steven Kolb, President and CEO of the CFDA, said in a statement. “Designers, including many of our CFDA Members, love to dress her for both stage and private moments.”
Lopez will be the last honoree under fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg’s tenure as CFDA chairwoman.
“Jennifer Lopez uses clothes as a way to express confidence and power,” CFDA Chairwoman Diane von Furstenberg added. “Both designers and fans look forward to her fashion statements.”
Lopez is known for her lengthy and impressive resume in Hollywood and through the years her fashion and style have garnered her nearly as much attention as her talent.
Any look back at J.Lo’s fashion evolution will pinpoint the moment she wore the now infamous plunging green dress by Versace to the Grammy Awards as her most pivotal fashion statement.
But in span of more than 20 years working in Hollywood she’s made some memorable fashion choices including the glittery white ensemble she wore to the MTV Music Awards, the silver mirror dress to the Oscars, and the voluminous pink gown with the long train she wore to the premiere of her latest film, Second Act.
She’s been dressed by some of the most sought-after designers including Balmain, Tom Ford and Zuhair Murad, Giambattista Valli, and Versace among others. But she’s also known for her casual, streetwear which was the core style of her clothing line, Sweetface which is now defunct. Her J.Lo by Jennifer Lopez line, which included the infamous velour tracksuit, has since evolved into a fashion line exclusively sold at Kohl’s.
“In New York, in the Bronx, it was very, ‘we dress like a boy with Doc Martens and man pants and a wife beater’. It was very Latin, big hoops and eyeliner, and that stayed with me. That mix of toughness and sexiness,” she told Harper’s Bazaar.
In addition to making her mark on the red carpet, she’s also graced the cover of all the major fashion magazines including becoming the first Latina to be named People’s Most Beautiful.

J.Lo already has a lot to celebrate this year including her engagement to former pro baseball player Alex Rodriguez and her “It’s My Party” tour in honor of her 50th birthday, kicking off June 7 in LA. She’s currently working on her new movie Hustlers co-starring Cardi B and opening September 13th.
