Selena’s Dad Speaks Out Against Maria Celeste’s “El Secreto De Selena”

As the series “El Secreto de Selena” continues to air on Telemundo, Selena Quintanilla’s father is speaking out against the show and creator. Abraham Quintanilla wrote a lengthy Facebook note about Maria Celester’s series — based on the book — criticizing her for trying to tarnish his daughter’s name with a “shameful cartoon she calls a documentary.”

He titled the note, “Healing wounds” and went on to write that he intended to withhold his grief and pain but is speaking out because of “the injustice of someone who without regret wants to make my daughter’s memory and image dirty.”

Selena Quintanilla‘s dad criticized the fact that Maria Celeste chose to not interview the Quintanilla’s but rather chose to tell a story based on her murderer. He also called out inaccuracies in the “El Secreto de Selena” series and believes Maria Celeste invented a false narrative in regards to a romance between Selena and Dr. Martinez. “That is not journalism,” he wrote. In 2012, however, Dr. Martinez did allege that he and Selena were involved in a relationship.

Maria Celeste responded to Abraham’s note by writing in a Facebook post that “Mr. Quintanilla himself called me to ask me to interview him exclusively,” after her interview with Yolanda Saldivar.

“On that occasion, he began by telling me before the cameras that he found it very professional how I questioned and refuted Yolanda Saldivar’s testimonies. It was HIS initiative to carry out that interview in recognition of my journalistic work.” Maria Celeste included a picture of herself and Abraham during an interview in the ’90s.

“Before the book was published, when the manuscript was still in my hands, and nobody had read it, Mr. Quintanilla threatened to take legal action to prevent its publication,” she continued to write on Facebook. “That threat never materialized because you cannot sue for defamation of work that does not defame. I have no doubt that if the book had any fault or lie, he would have filed a legal process against me, as he did against Chris Pérez, Selena’s widower, who wrote a beautiful book about his relationship with Selena and wanted to take to the screen that love story. Chris was NOT able to do it because Mr. Quintanilla took him to court and prevented him.”

Maria Celeste also added that none of the profits from her book or the series are going to her own pocket but rather a scholarship that is under Selena’s name.

Selena’s father has not yet responded to Maria Celeste’s latest Facebook post.
