It’s hard to say when the crew and cast will be able to start shooting, but fans do have something awesome to look forward to. Tomorrow, May 20, at 5 p.m. (EST), George Lopez will host a virtual table read with the cast on the Netflix Is A Joke channel on YouTube. The table read session will also raise money and awareness for Proyecto Pastoral, a Boyle Heights nonprofit organization working on addressing the impact COVID-19 has had on low-income families in the L.A. neighborhood.
America Ferrera, who’s credited as an executive producer and has directed and appeared on the show, was ecstatic to announce the show would be coming back for season two.
“Woohooooo!!!!” Ferrera wrote on Instagram. “So proud of the @gentefied family!!! Thanks @netflix for giving us a round 2!! Congrats @elmarvinlemus @lindayvettechavez for creating this irresistible world! Let’s do this!”

The show, created by Marvin Lemus and Linda Yvette Chávez, focuses on three Mexican-American cousins (played by Karrie Martin, J.J. Soria, and Carlos Santos). Their main problem is keeping the family restaurant open. They’re working around the clock helping Casimiro, their immigrant grandfather’s (played by Joaquín Cosio) taco restaurant remain open in Boyle Heights. But, because of gentrification in the neighborhood, the taco shop faces many challenges, including higher rent and changing demographics.
At the heart of the show, “Gentefied” is a warm and hilarious show about a tightknit family and friends that want to succeed in life while at the same time, always honoring their family and culture.
If you watched season one, you know that the show left us with so many questions. If you haven’t watched, stop reading right now! [Spoilers ahead] At the end of season one, we were thrilled that Lidia and Erik welcomed their baby and that they were working it out as a couple. Did that mean they would be moving to NorCal so Lidia could pursue her job at Stanford because if they move, what would that mean for Casimiro’s restaurant? Would it be able to stay open? And if Chris got another job at a more affluent restaurant, would he leave as well? Lastly, the biggest question we had was wondering if Ana and Yessika would get back together. They had so much love for each other, and it was sad to see them break up.
Perhaps tomorrow’s table read will have answer many of these questions. We can’t wait!
