Latina Poder: Why Latina Votes Are Crucial This Year
Latina votes are pivotal this election year to ensure our voices are heard
This year, the Latina vote has the power to influence the direction of the country, and today, our participation is more important than ever. Our vote is an essential voice on issues that directly and immediately impact our families and communities, and it’s crucial we value and use it wisely. Over the years, Latinas have proven to be a fundamental force in the electoral process, voting in higher proportions than Latino men, with the opportunity to cast votes on critical issues like the economy and reproductive rights. For many of us, inflation is a central concern, and on a more personal note, I am voting for immigration justice in honor of my parents, who are Mexican immigrants; for the rights that allow me and each woman to decide over our bodies and if and when to start a family and care for their future; and for climate justice, because I want to leave a cleaner, safer, and more prosperous environment for younger generations. Like me, Latinas across the country hold a diversity of opinions and experiences that reflect the breadth of our community, and each of us has the right and the power to shape the future we envision.
Since the 2020 elections, the Latinx community has represented half of the growth in the nation’s eligible voting population. This increase shows not only our numerical growth but also the rise of our influence in American politics. Latinas, in particular, are a key segment in this process: our participation has been historic and can define the outcome of close elections.
Latinas make up 12 percent of all registered women voters in the U.S. and have a strong impact in five states where they represent over 20 percent of registered voters: Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, and Texas. In tightly contested states like these, the Latina vote can tip the scales in favor of one candidate or another.
However, it’s not just about numbers; it’s about making sure our voices are heard on issues that affect our daily lives. By voting, we defend our rights and ensure that our needs and values are considered. In this election, Latina women have the chance to influence decisions that will impact not only our present but also the future of our families and communities.
Voting is an act of power and responsibility. When we vote, we make our voices heard, and in such a critical moment as this, every vote counts. Poder Latinx offers a helpful tool to review your ballot, ensuring you cast an informed vote and make choices that truly reflect your values and needs.
This is our time to assert our power and ensure that our community is well represented in decisions that will shape our future. Because Latinas VOTE!
