It’s been almost 17 years since the late R&B singer Aaliyah died but it looks like MAC Cosmetics is making efforts to keep her legacy alive, with it’s latest makeup collection inspired by the music icon’s beauty and 90s style. We’ve been impatiently waiting for what feels like forever for this to drop and I’m over the roof excited about the fact that we FINALLY got a launch date!
Like the Selena Quintanilla MAC Cosmetics collection, this one also came into existence after loyal fans started a petition on change.org for the brand to create a limited line inspired by the R&B queen. The brand told fans last year to stay tuned in 2018 for #AaliyahforMAC. We’ve just been waiting this whole time for the deets and the release date to finally be announced.
According to Aaliyah’s brother, Rashad Haughton, the singer was actually a huge fan of MAC herself—so it only made sense to create products inspired by her own beauty looks. Apparently Aaliyah swore by the MAC Lip Pencil Liner in Chestnut, the classic MAC Beige/brown Eyeshadow in Espresso, and the MAC Lipstick in Chelsea (which has been discontinued). How dope of her brother for remembering the specific MAC products she used, right?
“Aaliyah super fans everywhere—YOU made it happen! Inspired by your loyalty and love, the 90s-glam #AaliyahForMAC collection launches on maccosmetics.com on June 20th and in stores in North America on June 21st! Aaliyah lives on in a makeup collection influenced by her groundbreaking work in music and film,” MAC announced on their Instagram.
I’m beyond hyped for this collection, which features a nude colored lipstick — that would look popping on darker skin tones— and a gorgeous eyeshadow palette that consists of a combination of brown, bronze-y, and dark (including purple and black) hues the singer used to stay sporting. Everything about this line says 90s meets badass chick and I’m ALL for it. In fact, I haven’t been this excited since MAC launched it’s Selena Quintanilla collection in 2016.
If you think about it, Selena and Aaliyah had quite a bit in common. These two phenomenal WOC music artists had such a huge influence not just with young adults — but in culture. They both both made music that has gone down in history, they both had impeccable fashion taste and style that many of us still replicate today, and they were both far too young when they left this world.
But wait, there’s more. MAC also announced a casting call for an “A-Z of Aaliyah” short film they plan on creating that will be tied to the makeup collection launch. All fans have to do is post a video or photo to Instagram that shows how the R&B singer inspired them, using the hashtags #AtoZofAaliyah and #AaliyahForMAC.” How cool is that? I don’t know about you but I’m so ready for this!
