She released a statement saying that she was “so excited to join the ‘Step Up’ family. I know I have massive shoes to fill. Naya was incredible. I hope to honor Naya, her family, friends and fans with a great performance.”

“There are very few ethnic LGBT characters on television, so I am honored to represent them,” Rivera said about playing Santana back in 2013. “I love supporting this cause, but it’s a big responsibility, and sometimes it’s a lot of pressure on me.”

Rivera was reported missing on July 8 last year after taking a boat trip at Lake Piru in Ventura County, California with her four-year-old son, Josey. The child was found asleep alone on the boat three hours after it had been rented. Her body was found on July 13 after local officials commenced a recovery mission.

The Long Halloween is a two-part film, with the first half debuting this spring or summer. No announcement has been made for the second part.
