Netflix celebrated Day of the Dead at Hollywood Forever, a famous cemetery in Los Angeles, and it was incredible! While Day of the Dead was last week, we still cannot get enough of this festive tribute that honors the dead.
Hollywood Forever has been celebrating this Latino tradition for the past 18 years, but this year they had the most clever theme. They decided to honor our beloved fictional characters from some of our favorite Netflix shows.
“This year, along with the traditional Aztec blessings, musical performances of renowned Mexican artists, and an Art Exhibition in the Cathedral Mausoleum curated by Luis Villanueva, Netflix created five authentic altars to celebrate their beloved characters from popular shows who have ‘passed away’ but are still always with us–literally.”
So who was honored? Hollywood Forever paid tribute to Poussey from “Orange is the New Black,” journalist, Zoe Barnes from “House of Cards,” Diego Nava from “Ingobernable,” owner of the Cuervos soccer team, Salvador Iglesias from “Club de Cuervos,” and our favorite Barb from Stranger Things.”
Here’s some highlights from this beautiful event.
Love seeing how this event brings together traditional Aztec wear and mixed pop culture into our annual ritual.
“Orange Is the New Black”
The “Orange Is the New Black” altar had some pictures of the crew but also Mexican keepsakes like the Loteria and sugar skulls.
A closer look at the altar features a large portrait of Poussey.
“House Of Cards”
This altar had lots of bottles of wine, which accurately speaks to the life of a journalist.
Diego Nava from “Ingobernable”
Since “Ingobernable” takes place in Mexico, this altar was filled with items featuring the Mexican flag colors.
Day of the Dead L.A. Style
We love how attendees can dress up and be part of the festivities.
Barb from “Stranger Things”
This one has to be our favorite. We loved Barb’s character so much!
