The 2019 Oscars are on and popping and the red carpet has not disappointed! Women of color rocked it with fierce fashion and the attitude to match. Ruffles are all the rage, with Jennifer Hudson and Gemma Chan owning that trend harder than any of the other ladies. Metallic pastels like lilac and mint green are also having a major moment, as favored by Yalitza Aparicio and Awkwafina. Pink was also EVERYWHERE this year, making black dresses actually stand out in a sea of softer colors.

Amandla Stenberg unequivocally won my award for best dressed in a super special Miu Miu dress that was pitch perfect both on camera and on stage. But there were so many gorgeous women of color who crushed the game tonight. First up…wp_*posts

Yalitza Aparicio blessed the red carpet in a gorgeous teal Rodarte dress. It was adorned with tons of rhinestones and a floaty tulle skirt with silver dots. She kept her makeup super soft and natural, which matched the ethereal feel of her gown perfectly and complimented her gorgeous skin tone and features perfectly.

Constance Wu

Wearing a custom made sunshine yellow Versace and red lip, Wu was a vision. On hand to rep the incredible cast of Crazy Rich Asians, Wu won me over with her blunt answers for Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet. When asked if she was nervous to present an award in the room full of A-list celebs, she calmly replied: “No. I’m a theater kid so I’m used to performing in front of a crowd of people.” Yes, queen!  wp_*posts

Harrier looked absolutely gorgeous in her custom made Louis Vuitton gown that was sustainably made using fabrics and textiles that were sourced with environmental conscious choices in mind. Created in partnership with the Red Carpet Green Dress initiative, the dress perfectly matched her bold and beautiful blue eyeshadow.

Regina King

Regina King looked like an actual queen in this white, draped, Grecian gown. But what really stole the show was her thigh-high slit and her out of this world legs. She definitely won the award for fittest bod! She finished off her look with a liberal dose of diamonds courtesy of Chopard on her ears, wrist, and fingers.

Amandla Stenberg

Amandla Stenberg’s silver fringe 20s inspired Miu Miu gown was probably my favorite look of the night. It fit her like a glove and had enough detail to feel incredibly special without overwhelming her young body or outshining her face. The gown also upped the sexy factor by pairing a nude (and I mean an actual nude for WOC) slip with the dress that gave the illusion that she was ONLY wearing fringe. I’m here for this dress in every way. Her incredible braided hairdo and flawless makeup completed the outfit.

Marina de Tavira

Marina de Tavira arrived in a beautiful tiered J. Mendel gown in one of the night’s best dresses.  The strapless, tiered, cherry-red dress was the perfect amount of structured and artistic. De Tavira was just soaking it all in, telling Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet, “[This is] totally overwhelming, I’m enjoying every second and trying to realize I’m not dreaming.”

Jennifer Hudson

J. Hud rocked the second best look of the night IMHO. I’m normally not a huge fan of ruffles (though red is my favorite color) but this dress fit Hudson like a dream and just looked so incredible on the red carpet. The dramatic architectural shape made a statement and was one of the more memorable looks.

Angela Basset

In the same vein of J. Hud’s dress, Angela Basset also wore a huge ruffled piece of art. The hot pink, one-shouldered gown showcased the 60-year-old stunner’s insanely shapely guns and she finished the show-stopping look with a dramatic long ponytail. The custom-made Reem Acra was a dream.

Michelle Yeoh

Royalty, royalty, royalty! Michelle Yeoh channeled a real queen in this silvery vision. The Elie Saab gown was embroidered with gold lurex thread and sequins that glittered all different shades of blue. Explaining how excited she was to be presenting she mentioned that she, Wu, and Awkwafina were all presenting: “It means that we as an Asian community are represented here, because how often have you seen us? Not very much. I think the last time I was here was [for] Crouching Tiger and that is, like, 18 years ago.”

Tessa Thompson

Tessa Thompson wore a homage to Karl Lagerfeld in a glamorous, black, tiered Chanel number that was a welcome departure from all the fluffy pastel and pink gowns on the carpet. Her perfectly coifed soft waves and gorgeous yellow diamond double drop earrings completed the look.

Gemma Chan

Gemma Chan’s gown took up a LOT of space but was somehow not overpowering on her teeny tiny frame. The hot pink Valentino haute couture gown caught everyone’s attention so it definitely did its job. Styled exceptionally well with a low, tight bun and clean makeup, Chan pulled off the difficult loo with aplomb. The turned up neckline framed Chan’s absolutely gorgeous face like a beautiful flower. I was here for this gown even though it pushed some serious boundaries.

J.Lo legit looked like a freaking disco ball at the Oscars and I mean that in the BEST way possible. Wearing a truly stunning mirrored, long-sleeved, high neck Tom Ford gown that must’ve weighed a least 20 lbs, Lopez totally owned the carpet the second she decided to make her entrance. With sleek and simple hair and her signature smokey eye, Lopez’s body looks more than ready to take on her next role as a former stripper in Hustlers opposite Constance Wu.

Awkwafina

Yes, Awakwafina really DID do that. Rocking a sparkly, lavender, Dsquared2 pantsuit with the best accessory I saw all night: A freaking clutch that doubled as a flask! And was filled with tequila to boot. As if I needed an excuse to love Awkwafina any more than I already did.
