Earlier this week President Trump posted a tweet urging Congresswomen Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and Ayanna Pressley to “go back to the countries.” Earlier this month Nancy Pelosi attempted to belittle them in a comment to the New York Times for their shared liberal and progressive values. “All these people have their public whatever and their Twitter world, but they didn’t have any following. They’re four people and that’s how many votes they got,” she said. The four Congressman has since been referred to as “The Squad” and they are not staying silent about any of this. In fact, if you really want to support them, you can with these new “We Are The Squad” T-shirts they’re currently selling in exchange for a shared donation of $25 or more.
The Congresswomen want the world to know that their squad has never consisted of just four people but instead of everyone that supports them and their causes.
Ocasio-Cortez’s team sent an email blast on Tuesday that read: “You are a part of the squad. The squad has never just been four people — it’s always been every person in the movement for social, racial, economic, and environmental just in the United States,” and also included a link to where you can order the T-shirts.
“The squad has never been just four people. Our squad is everyone who recognizes the cruelty and bigotry of this Administration and is committed to advocating, legislating, and working every day for a more just and equitable world. Our squad is big,” it reads on the site. “Your donations have made this movement possible, so we’d like to say thank you by sending you a bit of swag when you chip in now.” The shirts are 100% cotton, union-printed and unisex cut. They also include a white or black option.
Trump’s Twitter rant on Sunday was everything from xenophobic to racist. “Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came from,” one of his idiotic tweets read. It’s obvious that his tweet was a response to the fact that all four Congresswomen are women of color. Had they been white, Trump probably wouldn’t have told them to “go back to their countries.” Interestingly enough, ALL these women are American AF. In fact, Ocasio-Cortez of NYC, Pressley of Massachusetts, and Tlaib were all born here in the states. Omar was a Somalian refugee but she’s actually a naturalized citizen of the US, making her just as American as any other American.
In fact, Omar responded with a tweet that read: “You are stoking white nationalism bc you are angry that people like us are serving in Congress and fighting against your hate-filled agenda.” She even added a quote from Robert F. Kennedy at the end.
“America’s answer to the intolerant man is diversity, the very diversity which our heritage of religious freedom has inspired,” she tweeted.
It’s empowering to see four strong and brave women of color who aren’t afraid to call out and speak against xenocide, sexism, and racism. And they’re right, they aren’t four people. They have thousands of supporters out there — including myself — who are committed to fighting this fight against social, racial, economic, and environmental injustices. We’re with them!
