I know that I’m not alone in my love for cute and fun plants that are also easy to care for, right, chicas? Succulent plants are just that—their thick roots, stems, or leaves allow for large quantities of water storage when compared to most other plants. This quality allows succulents to conserve water during prolonged droughts, so they thrive in very dry areas (or in areas like your home where you may forget to water them) that other plants would die in. Cacti are one of the most common examples of succulents, but there are many other kinds such as kalanchoe and desert rose. So remember that all cacti are succulents, but not all succulents are cacti.

General Care for Succulents and Cacti

One of the best features of succulents is that they serve as air purifiers, especially in indoor areas, to help keep us healthy. These plants come in a wide variety of colors and textures. You can plant the seeds individually or combine them in a single flowerpot. They require very little water (likely only once every two or three weeks and no more than six to eight ounces at a time). You can be creative with the pots you choose—I generally like to make sure they’re breathable and made of clay, stone, or cement.

A tip specific to cacti: be sure to place them in a very sunny area. If they’re indoors, make sure that they’re near a window or very bright light. There are many varieties, colors, and sizes to choose from. Feel free to go as wild as you like! When cacti get plenty of sunlight, many of them will flower with bright blossoms like red, white, orange, yellow, pink, or purple. They grow slowly and fertilizer doesn’t usually speed things up. But if you do add fertilizer, make sure it’s during spring or summer. Another great benefit of cacti is that you’ll never have to worry about trimming or pruning them.

So if you’re trying to find a way to spice up your home, patio, or workspace, succulents and cacti are ideal plants requiring minimal effort.
