Growing up, I didn’t come across many people who knew who Selena Quintanilla was. Usually, if you weren’t from Texas or Mexico, or had family members, like my grandparents, who spoon-fed you Univision and Telemundo (and shows like Padrisimo and Sabado Gigante) you hadn’t quite been acquainted with her greatness. It wasn’t until after her passing and her biopic, Selena, starring Jennifer Lopez, that more people became familiar with the Queen of Tejano.
But Selena Quintanilla-Perez’s popularity has grown inexplicably 22 years following her untimely death, and it’s absolutely amazing. She’s gained a whole new crowd of superfans, which her sister Suzette Quintanilla credits to millennials; had a limited-edition MAC cosmetics line created after her; was recently honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and a wax figure at Madame Tussauds; and was inducted into the Texas Women’s Hall of Fame. There was even an exhibit which showcased her Coca-Cola ad photoshoot at the National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. that explained how Selena changed the world of marketing.
