Fans of One Day at a Time were devasted when Netflix announced yesterday they were officially canceling the show after three seasons. People on social media made a case for keeping the show on Netflix for weeks. It seemed as if every time the show was up for a new season renewal, canceling it was always a prospect. And each year, the fans saved it. Unfortunately, it didn’t work this time. But there is hope! Lin-Manuel Miranda — who is a one-man army — promised to protect the show. And if anyone can do it, we trust that he can.

Late last night, Miranda tweeted a video alongside ODAAT star Rita Moreno in which he said, “are we going to save the show?” and she replied, “of course we are. I need a new set of curtains.” Miranda laughs and then firmly said on the video “we’re going to save the show!” Then used the hashtag #SaveODAAT.

He made a case for the show earlier yesterday by tweeting: “Yknow, that Latinx audience is SO vast and SO underserved…if only we had a show that we KNOW would have a passionate, young fanbase…”-Every TV exec everywhere. Us: Haaaave you met

The fan base is there, but not enough for Netflix to continue to air it. Yesterday afternoon, Netflix tweeted: We’ve made the very difficult decision not to renew One Day At A Time for a fourth season. The choice did not come easily — we spent several weeks trying to find a way to make another season work but in the end simply not enough people watched to justify another season. Thank you, Norman Lear, for bringing this series back to television. Thank you, Gloria Calderon Kellett & Mike Royce, for always making us laugh and never shying away from bravely and beautifully tackling tough subject matter in a meaningful way.”

They also added: “And to anyone who felt seen or represented — possibly for the first time — by ODAAT, please don’t take this as an indication your story is not important. The outpouring of love for this show is a firm reminder to us that we must continue finding ways to tell these stories.”

That last tweet was a real stab in the heart. Netflix understands the deep connection Latinx audiences have for the show, and they know the importance of keeping these stories alive. They can still kill those aspirations and not try to fight for it because they clearly can.

Either way, this is not the end of ODAAT. We trust Miranda knows what he’s doing. He’s done it before. He had a hand in saving the almost cancelation of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.” He was one of a handful of celebrities to keep it from cancelation and then not too long ago played a role in the show as well. So the real question now remains: who will Miranda play on ODAAT?

Miranda isn’t the only one fighting for the show. ODAAT producer, Mike Royce, said they would be looking into all options including finding another home for the beloved program.

One Day At A Time will live on the air once again. It’s just a matter of time.
