Daddy Yankee Makes History on ‘The Late Late Show’

Reggaeton pioneer Daddy Yankee has always made historic moves. The multi-platinum artist made history Wednesday as the first-ever Spanish language musical artist to perform on CBS’ The Late Late Show with James Corden. The Puerto Rican performer showcased his latest single “Con Calma,” featuring Snow, which hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay Songs chart this week.

The lively performance kicks off with smoke and neon lights. Before the audience even gets a glimpse of the Grammy-nominated star, who sported a grey zippered jacket and sweatpants, they’re met with a collective of blue tracksuit-wearing dancers similar to those in the song’s official video. His delivery is smooth, as he performs in front of the neon backdrop and in front of his crew of dancers. Midway through the performance, a quartet of dancers appears with Yankee heads — yet another nod to the song’s video. Canadian reggae star Snow appears on screen for his verse.

“Con Calma” was at No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Digital Songs chart for two weeks and was the most streamed song on Spotify’s Global chart. It’s now at number two following Arianna Grande’s “7 Rings.”

Daddy Yankee isn’t new to producing hits and continues to be honored for his countless contributions to reggaeton and urbano music. Last year, he became the first Latin artist to reach No. 1 on Spotify, which scored him 10 Guinness World Records.

Last month, the “Gasolina” singer was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at Premio Lo Nuestro. He took the stage with De La Ghetto, J Balvin, Ozuna, Yandel, and Zion & Lennox to perform his greatest hits, including “Ella Me Levantó,” “Lo Que Pasó, Pasó” and “Rompe.” In October, he received the Icon Award at the 2018 Latin American Music Awards.

“It’s such a great honor and I feel blessed, honestly, I feel blessed,” he said to ET about receiving the recognition. “It’s a big award but I think one of the things that people connect with DY is that I’m natural. So I’m just gonna live in the moment and everything I got in my heart I will express it in that moment.”
