George Lopez Says Latinos Aren’t Speaking Out Against Trump

George Lopez isn’t a fan of President Donald Trump. The comedian has been a vocal opponent of Trump, his administration, and their anti-immigration policies. While he has spoken out against them, he thinks Latinos have not. In an interview with The Hill, Lopez said the Latino community has not done enough to show their disdain against Trump and his policies, primarily when it affects their own community.

“Unfortunately, I haven’t seen any reaction from the Latino community in regards to the thousands of people who are being detained and the children who are not with their parents,” Lopez, said. “I think the Latino community has a bigger issue of — we go silent, no voice, no change. We didn’t vote very much. We need to start realizing that our vote is as important as any other American in the United States. There’s a lot of people who are undocumented in this country, but it’s amazing to me, as I’ve said, how documented the undocumented people are. We need to make out voice heard, and we need to go out and vote, and not be silent.”

Lopez has been speaking out against Trump for years. In 2015, Lopez said that if Trump won the election, Latinos would leave the U.S. “If he wins, he won’t have to worry about immigration, we’ll all go back!” In 2017, during a fundraising event where Lopez was doing a standup routine, the comedian made a couple of Trump jokes, which some people in attendance didn’t like. He did apologize, kind of, for offending the audience.

“Listen, it’s about the kids,” he said after getting booed “I apologize for bringing politics to an event. This is America — it still is. So I apologize to your white privilege.”

He has also gotten into altercations with Trump supporters.

In late 2018, when images showed border patrol officials throwing tear gas cans at asylum seekers, Lopez said on Instagram, “I can’t get this image out of my mind. Yes, we have a right and duty to protect our borders. But we can’t do so by shooting tear-gas at innocent children. The world is watching. And for all those politicians that love to y’all about their Christianity and quote Bible verses, God is watching too. This is not who we are, America.”
