When I first heard that a Party of Five reboot was in the works, I didn’t overthink it. I didn’t get excited, even though I really loved the original. I sincerely assumed that it was just going to be another remake that wouldn’t hold a candle to the original. Then I found out the reboot featured an all-Latinx cast. I was intrigued. Then I heard about the plot: a family is torn apart after immigration officials arrest a mother and father, now their oldest son is responsible for taking care of his four siblings. It’s the kind of story we hear in our community all the time. Alas, the trailer for the new show is finally here.

The first look at Party of Five is a heartbreaking one. Audiences get to see how the Acosta family came to be in the situation they are in now, without parents. The family is seen dining together when ICE agents enter and ask to see the parents’ identification. When they can’t provide any, they are then taken into detention.

The next scene shows the mom and dad behind a fenced area with their children on the other side crying, holding their hands through the fence. “Stay strong,” the dad tells his older son, who now faces the reality of having to raise his younger siblings under these incredibly tough circumstances. If you thought the original show was hard to watch, I imagine this new story — with the deportation of the parents — will be even more intense and sad.

Neve Campbell, who appeared in the original show, voiced her support of the show, saying the show’s subject matter is timely, and it works even better because the original creators are working on the reboot.
