Blue Ivy Carter’s resume is more impressive than the average person and she’s only 7. Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s daughter just won her first music award during the 2019 BET Soul Train Awards where she and her parents won the Ashford & Simpson Songwriting award for “Brown Skin Girl.” Blue Ivy — who also sings on the track along with Guyanese musician SAINt JHN — opens and closes the song with “Brown skin girl / Your skin just like pearls / The best thing in the world / Never trade you for anybody else.”
The song is part of The Lion King: The Gift, 14-track album she released this summer just as the live animation remake of The Lion King was released with Beyoncé starring as Nala. The album debuted at No. 2 while the song debuted at No. 76 on the Billboard Hot 100 marking Blue Ivy’s debut on the Billboard charts.
“I wanted to make sure we found the best talent from Africa and not just use some of the sounds or did my own interpretation of it,” Beyoncé said in the interview with Good Morning America. “I wanted it to be authentic to what is beautiful to the music in Africa.”
The album was praised for being an ode to blackness and the song sparked the viral social media movement #BrownSkinGirlChallenge with many black women including Lupita Nyong’ o, Naomi Campbell, and Kelly Rowland praising the positive message of the song.

In the song, Beyoncé gives a shout out to each of them as examples of beauty: “Pose like a trophy when Naomis walk in / She need an Oscar for that pretty dark skin / Pretty like Lupita when the cameras close in / Drip broke the levee when my Kellys roll in.”
We’re sure this is only the beginning of Blue Ivy’s musical career but she’s got big shoes to fill following in the footsteps of her mother. Beyoncé is the most-awarded artist at the Soul Train Awards with 16 statues and she’s also the most nominated woman and the second-most awarded woman in Grammy history.
Blue Ivy has slowly started to break out into the music scene also appearing in the video for “Spirit,” another song from The Lion King: The Gift but let’s not forget she also appeared on “Blue’s Freestyle / We Family,” a track on Jay’Z’s 4:44 album when she was five years old. “Never seen a ceiling in my whole life,” she raps on the track.
Now that she can claim the title of award-winning songwriter while still in elementary school, it’s clear the sky’s the limit for this musical prodigy.
