There has been so much excitement and buzz around the Latinx remake of the beloved film, Father of the Bride starring Andy Garcia. While many speculated on who would be cast, it looks like they’re keeping it Cuban for real AND in the film as sources told Deadline icon Gloria Estefan will be playing Garcia’s wife. The publication also reports that Adria Arjona will play the bride-to-be and Matt Lopez will write the script with Gaz Alazraki directing.
“A resounding YES was my answer to the invitation to join my good friend, the incredibly talented Andy Garcia, for this new and wonderfully warm and funny incarnation of the classic, Father of the Bride! I’ve been a fan of director Gaz Alazraki since I saw his record-breaking comedy Nosotros Los Nobles and can’t wait to experience how he brings this amazing script by Matt Lopez to life,” Estefan said in an Instagram post.
Alazraki also directed Club de Cuervos on Netflix while Lopez worked on Disney films including The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and Race to Witch Mountain. Sources say Lopez was inspired by his own cross-cultural nuptials and the Cuban weddings he has attended which were epic in scale, Deadline reported. Arjona, 28, is a Puerto Rican-Guatemalan actress and daughter of mega-successful singer Ricardo Arjona. She is known for her roles as Emily in season two of True Detective (2015) and as Anathema Device in the mini-series Good Omens.
Garcia, who is the father of three daughters, was born in Havana, Cuba as was Estefan so we’re happy to see the casting is true to the story. The remake follows the same concept as the original with a father coming to grips with his daughter’s upcoming nuptials and this time it’s with a Cuban-American family. The “Conga” singer hasn’t taken on many acting roles since making her acting debut in Music of the Heart (1999) with this latest role being only her third time on screen. She did have a guest starring role in the beloved sitcom One Day at a Time which also centered around a Cuban-American family. Garcia, 64, is known for films including The Untouchables, Stand and Deliver, The Godfather Part III, and the Mama Mia sequel.
“I’m very excited to join The Father of the Bride, a beloved film that has brought so much joy to so many over the years and to represent my Cuban culture and heritage in this story,” Garcia said in a statement. “I commend Warner Bros. for their foresight and celebrate this opportunity they have created. I am looking forward to my collaboration with our talented director Gaz Alazraki and producers Jeremy Kleiner and Dede Gardner from Plan B.”
The 1991 version of Father of the Bride starred Steve Martin as the loving and goofy father figure with Diane Keaton as the more level-headed matriarch and Kimberly Williams-Paisley as the young bride. Deadline reported that this film will be more of a romantic comedy than the previous films including the original from 1950 starring Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor.
