Marvel Announces Latinx-Led Comic Anthology ‘Comunidades’

Superhero fans, get ready—Marvel Comics has announced a comic anthology that will center Latinx heroes and creators, writers, and artists from the Marvel Universe! After the success of their previous collections, including Marvel’s Voices: Legacy and Marvel’s Voices: Pride, the company is now planning to release Marvel’s Voices: Comunidades #1, honoring the history and diverse cultural heritages of Latinx superheroes both old and new. That, of course, includes Hector Ayala/White Tiger, famously known as Marvel’s first Latinx superhero whose legacy will be revisited by New York Times best-selling author Daniel José Older. As well as America Chavez, Marvel’s first Latin-American LGBTQ character who is starring in her own ongoing series, America since March 2017 by writer queer boricua writer Gabby Rivera.

“This is such an excellent project, and I’m very happy to get to be part of it,” Older said in a statement. “I’ve read all the Marvel’s Voices collections and loved them, so it’s great to be able to write for one! ¡Pa’lante!”

Older then took to Twitter sharing, “Please note that even back in the day White Tiger knew we don’t italicize no damn Spanish when we slip back and forth seamlessly. (And comics love some italics lol) I merely walk in his legacy.”

The project will spotlight some of our favorite Latinx superheroes, too, including Miles Morales, America Chavez (who will be played by Xochitl Gomez in the upcoming Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness), Ghost Rider, and Nina the Conjurer. Even brand-new characters, including one created by Reptil-creator and writer Terry Blas, will be featured.

Other writers include Karla Pacheco, Alex Segura, Leo Romero, Edgar Delgado, Nico Leon, and Frederick Luis Aldama, a distinguished comics scholar, and author and editor of over forty books, including Latinx Superheroes in Mainstream Comics, who will pen the introduction.

The official cover, along with variants, has already been released ahead of the anthology’s publication, created by a wide range of talented Latinx artists like Joe Quesada, Mateus Manhanini, Maria Wolf, Mike Spicer, Nabetse Zitro, Jesus Aburtov, George Pérez, and Java Tartaglia.

“Marvel Voices is such a unique project that I feel really drills down on the core Marvel tenet of reflecting the world outside your window—so when the opportunity came to help put together Marvel Voices: Comunidades and celebrate the Latinx community, I couldn’t have been more excited,” co-editor Lauren Amaro said in a press release.

“Marvel Voices has been an amazing force in comics, letting creators from so many backgrounds bring our heritage and identities to Marvel stories,” Pacheco said in a statement. “I’m honored to bring this very personal story from my own childhood to the book through Robbie Reyes.”

As a huge Marvel and comic book fan myself, I’m thrilled that the anthology will be yet another opportunity for Latinx voices to shine this year alongside Marvel’s upcoming film projects Eternals and Modok. Now more than ever, seeing my community spotlighted and uplifted in these ways fills me with pride and hope for our representation in the future, both on and off-screen.

Marvel’s Voices: Comunidades #1 will be released October 20, 2021.
