Trying out new foundations is interesting, especially if you find something that you like. I’m very picky, so while finding a foundation I like is not particularly easy, the hunt is always exciting!

I stumbled across cushion foundations while browsing the Yves Saint Laurent counter a few weeks ago. I had been using my beloved Kat Von D Tattoo Lock-it Foundation for ages now, and felt like it was time for something newer and lighter for summer. I asked the associate to match me and I went home with my new cushion foundation, excited as ever.

So, what’s a cushion foundation exactly? It’s basically a sponge soaked in liquid foundation and put into a compact. The compact comes with a puff and mirror for easy, no mess application. Cushion foundations are popular in Asia, and have been making their way into the makeup world.

Since using my cushion foundation, I’ve completely fallen in love with it for these three reasons.

I tend to touch up my makeup during the day, and it can be annoying having to always lug around a foundation in your bag. However, cushion foundations, come in a compact case along with a mirror, so it’s easy to retouch throughout the day or right before you go out. Because everything you need is all in one, it is the perfect size for traveling or going out. I can even fit my cushion compact into a small crossbody bag. Talk about portable!

Now, I used to be a die-hard medium-to-full coverage foundation gal. Since I was so used to my full coverage foundations, putting on a cushion foundation at first was a weird experience. I was surprised at how it improved imperfections without covering them up all the way or making my skin look thick or cakey. Recently, I’ve been loving the natural and understated look of makeup, but still want some coverage for my hyperpigmentation and redness. Cushion foundation formulas tend to be light and natural looking. Also, the product can just be applied to problem areas without having to cover up the entire face.

Liquid foundation can be a bit risky when traveling or just simply transporting it from place to place. Because the cushion is soaked in the foundation, it is easy to just toss in a purse or beach bag and not have to worry about spillage or leakage. It’ll be easier to pack for planes, too.

These foundations are definitely perfect for the summer. They’re available at your local drugstore, or if you’re feeling like throwing down some extra cash, you can also find them at your local Sephora or luxury department store makeup counter.
