Demi Lovato made a triumphant comeback to the stage last night at the 2020 Grammy Awards in Los Angeles. The singer performed for the first time in two years since her overdose. Lovato sang a new song titled “Anyone,” which she recorded just two days before she suffered an overdose at her L.A. home.
Dressed all in white, Lovato looked stunning on stage. While she stumbled just a bit at the beginning of the song, which is entirely understandable considering the circumstances, she sang the emotional ballad in pure form just as we knew she would.
“What an unbelievable night,” Lovato wrote on Instagram after her performance. “My first time back on stage in almost 2 years. So emotional for me. Thank you all for the love, support, and for sharing this moment with me. I love you all.”
Selena Gomez also sent encouraging and supportive words to her longtime friend via Instagram, saying, “I wish there were words to describe how beautiful, inspirational, and DESERVED this moment was. Demi, I’m so happy for you. Thank you for your courage and bravery.”
Just last month, Lovato told her fans that the next time people would hear from her she “would be singing.” Then, a couple of weeks later, she announced she would be performing at the 2020 Grammy Awards. The “Sorry Not Sorry” singer has been on an incredible journey of recovering not just since her overdose two years ago, but for several years. She has made it quite public that she has suffered from substance abuse issues for quite some time. Now she seems to be healthier than ever with a new perspective on her life and career.
Last week, she talked about her comeback with Zane Lowe on Apple Music’s Beats 1 and her new song “Anyone,”
“I wish I could go back in time and help that version of myself,” she said in retrospect. “If I ever come back, I want to sing this song,” Lovato recalled thinking while in the hospital after her overdose. “I almost listen back and hear these lyrics as a cry for help. And you kind of listen back to it and you kind of think, how did nobody listen to this song and think, ‘Let’s help this girl?'”
Here’s a portion of the lyrics:
I tried to talk to my piano
I tried to talk to my guitar
Talked to my imagination
Confided in to alcohol
I tried and tried and tried some more
Told secrets ’til my voice was sore
Tired of empty conversation
‘Cause no one hears me anymore
[Pre-Chorus]
A hundred million stories
And a hundred million songs
I feel stupid when I sing
Nobody’s listening to me
Nobody’s listening
I talked to shooting stars
But they always get it wrong
I feel stupid when I pray
So, why am I praying anyway?
If nobody’s listening
