Liza Colón-Zayas and Zoe Saldaña are among the nominees and celebrating their first ever Golden Globes noms
The Golden Globes nominations are here, and several Latinas including Sofía Vergara, Liza Colón-Zayas, Zoe Saldaña, and Selena Gomez were nominated for their performances in film and television. Their inclusion this year is meaningful, as Latinx talent generally doesn’t get the praise it deserves at entertainment award shows. Additionally, Saldaña and Gomez are among the 10 nominations the musical crime film Emilia Pérez received, the most of any movie, including one for best comedy or musical. Colón-Zayas could also go on to make history if she wins becoming the first Latina to win a Golden Globe in that category. It’s the first Golden Globe nomination for both Saldaña and Colón-Zayas which is also a major moment for Afro-Latina representation. Gomez also made history as the second Latina in 35 years to earn Golden Globe nominations for TV and film in the same year.
Puerto Rican actress Colón-Zayas, known for her role as Tina Marrero in The Bear, was nominated for the Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in Television category, earning her first Golden Globe nomination. “This [Emilia Pérez] was really necessary for me to do and to get in touch with, and I hope that this isn’t the last thing that I do in Spanish. I would love to take care of that and nurture that side of me more,” she told HOLA! in an interview. According to the publication, she follows in the footsteps of Bolivian American actress Raquel Welch who was the first Latina to receive nominations in both film and TV in 1989.
