Was Selena Quintanilla a Republican or Democrat? People are questioning where she would stand on the side of politics today after a Latino put a MAGA hat on the Selena statue in Corpus Christi, Texas.

According to the Houston Chronicle, Joe Michael Perez — a Donald Trump supporter who owns a Trump memorabilia boutique inside the Corpus Christi Trade Center — posted next to the Selena statue and put one of his hats on it. He submitted the picture to a local Latinx website.

The image, which was posted on Instagram, had the caption: “Hispanic Republican? Yep, and they’re speaking up. Joe Michael Perez places a Donald Trump ‘Keep America Great’ hat on the Selena Quintanilla statute in downtown Corpus Christi in way to express the symbolic Latino support for President Donald Trump. As for immigration critics, Joe Michael Perez says ‘do it the right way.'”

Selena’s father, Abraham Quintanilla, is voicing his disdain for the image. He told the Houston Chronicle that Perez is “is a disrespectful idiot,” adding, “Selena was never involved with politics.”

But we beg to differ. Selena may not have been a vocal Republican or Democrat but she did have opinions about political topics, even controversial ones. Selena, at an early age, seemed to be very conservative. She didn’t believe in sex before marriage or abortion.

In an interview with J.R. Castilleja, Selena told him she was “against abortion” after he asked her about the teen pregnancy issues among young Latinas.

“I’m against abortions. I don’t think that it’s right,” she said. “You know, everybody is entitled to their opinion, but the way I was raised is – it’s kind of hard, and it’s very upsetting that you see people, or especially politicians (and I don’t want to get on the subject of politics)… They encourage kids to use condoms, and I think that parents should encourage kids to not have sex before marriage because if you stop that right there then you’re not going to have teen pregnancy. You need to teach your children morals first before they get married. It should be marriage and then children afterwards.”

If she were alive today, we don’t know if she would support Trump but we know for a fact she would not like his anti-immigration issues or the offensive ways he talks about Brown and Black people. Either way, placing a Trump hat on Selena is downright rude and people on social media were livid

What do you think? Do you think Selena would have supported Trump if she were alive today?
