Lin-Manuel Miranda will be directing his first feature film for Netflix and he now has his starring lead. It was announced yesterday that actor Andrew Garfield would be starring in Miranda’s directorial debut of tick, tick…BOOM!
Let’s rewind for a second, in case you didn’t know, tick, tick…BOOM! is the complex and emotional autobiographical play written by the late playwright Jonathan Larson. If you’ve seen the historic Broadway play Rent then you know of Larson’s work. The playwright wrote Rent but sadly died right before its Off-Broadway premiere.
The plot of tick, tick…BOOM! is, summarized by Deadline, about “an aspiring theater composer who waits tables in New York City while writing Superbia, which he hopes will be the great American musical that will finally give him his big career break. The young man is feeling pressure from his girlfriend Susan, who is tired of continuing to put her life on hold for Jon’s career aspiration. Meanwhile, Jon’s best friend and roommate Michael has given up on his creative dream and has taken a high paying advertising job on Madison Avenue and is preparing to move out. As Jon approaches his 30th birthday, he is overcome with anxiety, wondering if his own impossible dream is worth the cost.”

What’s beautiful about this project is that it’s the true story of Larson and that it is finally seeing the light of day for the masses in a film directed by Miranda. The two playwrights have a lot in common.
Aside from being creative geniuses, they are the two of nine stage visionaries that have won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
Aside from Garfield, other cast members have yet to be announced. But we can’t wait to see Garfield in action. If you’ve never watched his films or broadway shows, this Academy Award-nominated actor (he also won a Tony for Angels in America) is truly one of the best actors of our time.
Ultimately, we cannot wait for Miranda and Garfield to work together on this project. It’s going to be phenomenal.
