Naya Rivera Will Posthumously Voice Catwoman in Animated Batman Film

Actress and singer Naya Rivera died in a drowning accident at the age of 33 last year and now Entertainment Weekly confirmed that her final project is set to be released

Actress and singer Naya Rivera died in a drowning accident at the age of 33 last year and now Entertainment Weekly confirmed that her final project is set to be released. Rivera had completed voice work on the upcoming Batman: The Long Halloween, Part One before her death as Catwoman/Selina Kyle in the DC animated film. Other cast members include Jensen Ackles (Supernatural) as Batman, Josh Duhamel as Harvey Dent, Billy Burke as James Gordon, Titus Welliver as Carmine Falcone, David Dastmalchian as Calendar Man, and Troy Baker as Joker. This is presumed to be her final work as she was not working on any other projects at the time of her death.

In February of this year it was announced that Rivera’s role as Collette in the third season of the Starz series Step Up: High Water would be assumed by Cuban actress-singer Christina Milian. She released a statement saying that she was “so excited to join the ‘Step Up’ family. I know I have massive shoes to fill. Naya was incredible. I hope to honor Naya, her family, friends and fans with a great performance.”

Rivera’s fellow Glee cast members are set to reunite this month for the 32nd annual GLAAD Media Awards, performing in honor of her. Rivera played Santana Lopez and the presentation marks the 10th anniversary of her character coming out, she was commended for playing one of the first out and proud characters of color in mainstream media. The actors appearing in the tribute include Amber Riley, Jane Lynch, Jenna Ushkowitz, Kevin McHale, Heather Morris, Matthew Morrison, Chris Colfer, Darren Criss, Jacob Artist, Vanessa Lengies, Alex Newell, Harry Shum Jr. and Becca Tobin.The GLAAD Media Awards will air on GLAAD‘s YouTube channel on April 8.

“There are very few ethnic LGBT characters on television, so I am honored to represent them,” Rivera said about playing Santana back in 2013. “I love supporting this cause, but it’s a big responsibility, and sometimes it’s a lot of pressure on me.”

Rivera was reported missing on July 8 last year after taking a boat trip at Lake Piru in Ventura County, California with her four-year-old son, Josey. The child was found asleep alone on the boat three hours after it had been rented. Her body was found on July 13 after local officials commenced a recovery mission.

The Long Halloween is a two-part film, with the first half debuting this spring or summer. No announcement has been made for the second part.
