People’s Choice Awards: Did Zendaya Snub Giuliana Rancic?
Zendaya had a big night at the 2019 E! People’s Choice Awards, and it wasn’t all about her awards
Zendaya had a big night at the 2019 E! People’s Choice Awards, and it wasn’t all about her awards. The actress took home two awards last night, one for Female Movie Star of 2019 and Drama TV Star of 2019, so she’s officially killing it on the small screen and big screen too. With all that clout, Zendaya continues to prove she’s a person to be reckoned with — just ask Giuliana Rancic. It’s been four years since the E! News figure disrespected Zendaya during a red-carpet fashion show in which Rancic said that Zendaya’s dreadlocks looked as if they smelled like weed.
Last night, Zendaya walked the red-carpet and reportedly skipped by Rancic Radar Online reports. According to the online publication, “She flashed a few smiles but did not stop for interviews.” Rancic faced immense backlash in 2015 when she commented on Zendaya’s look during a segment on the former E! show, Fashion Police. Rancic said back then, “She’s in such a tiny frame that this hair to me overwhelms her like I feel like she smells like patchouli oil or weed, yeah, maybe weed.”
The 23-year-old actress said that moment was an awakening for her, which led her to start standing up for herself.

“[The incident] kind of reassured the fact that what I’m doing, as far as fashion, is bigger than just pretty clothes and going to fashion shows and being cute and getting pictures taken,” Zendaya said in 2016, reflecting on the matter that happened the year before, according to Page Six. She added, “It empowered me to continue to break down boundaries and to expand the mold of what beautiful is to people.”
Some might say that Zendaya is still holding a grudge or that she should forget the incident and move on. However, Zendaya showed up to the award show that is now hosted by the E! network. We’d say that is moving on enough, but definitely not forgetting. Rancic’s backlash also resulted in her leaving the E! Network between 2015-2018. Now, a year after her return, Rancic said she is leaving the network for good.
“The decision for E! News was one that really came from wanting to be with family more, and focusing and spending as much time as possible with family,” Giuliana said in an interview with People magazine last week. “And then also having that flexibility to give 100 percent to our restaurants and our other businesses — to be doing things that we’re really passionate about. So it’s nice though to be able to still kind of stay and do it all.”
