Shakira has a track record for releasing catchy tracks in English and Spanish and now she’s combining both languages for her new song for Zootopia 2. The Colombian superstar is reprising her role as Gazelle in the sequel and has released a Spanglish track entitled “Zoo” that dropped today. While “Try Everything” was written by Sia and Norwegian duo Stargate, for “Zoo” Shakira joined forces with musician Ed Sheeran along with Blake Slatkin and Alex “A.C.” Castillo to write and produce the track. Both songs have a catchy beat, inspiring yet playful lyrics, and this time around Shaki includes Spanish lyrics as a part of the track. “Es una fiesta que sube como la espuma/Yo por ti iré hasta la luna de ida y vuelta,” she sings.
The 48-year-old icon returns for the sequel, out November 26, as the popstar Gazelle, a character she shared she identified with during an interview with Entertainment Tonight in 2016 following the release of the first film:
“You know, when they first presented me with Gazelle, the character that I do in the movie, I felt identified with her because she’s opinionated like me, she’s got many aspects of my own personality,” she said, adding that she did provide some creative input on what the character would look like. “We wanted to make Gazelle the character that I’m interpreting a little bit more similar to me. And so they asked me what I thought it should have and I said, ‘Put some meat on the bones, you know? Poor girl, she needs some hips.'”
Gazelle performs “Try Everything” in the film reminiscent of Shaki’s own style of performing and the song quickly became one of the most successful Disney songs of all time. It was nominated for Best Song Written For Visual Media at the 59th Grammy Award and 2020 Billboard named it one of the 12 best Disney songs of the 21st century. The film was also a massive success winning the Best Animated Feature at the 89th Academy Awards and earning more than a billion dollars at the box office. The sequel, produced by Mexican American producer Yvett Merino (Encanto), comes almost a decade later with rookie animal cops Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) who once again partner up to save the day after a pit viper, Gary De’Snake (Ke Huy Quan), arrives in metropolis.
