Max has just dropped the official trailer for Chespirito: Not Really On Purpose, an upcoming eight-episode biographical series chronicling the life and legacy of one of Latin America’s most iconic entertainers, Roberto Gómez Bolaños, better known to generations of fans as Chespirito.

Born on February 21, 1929, in Mexico City, Bolaños became a household name throughout Latin America and beyond thanks to his unforgettable creations, including El Chavo del 8, El Chapulín Colorado, and the sketch comedy show Chespirito. His blend of slapstick humor, endearing characters, and social satire made his work a cultural touchstone for millions. Bolaños passed away in 2014 at the age of 85 in Cancún, but his influence endures through reruns, memes, and a loyal fanbase that spans generations.

Chespirito: Not Really On Purpose is set to premiere June 5 on Max and promises to offer a comprehensive look into the man behind the red antennae and the striped cap. The series retraces Bolaños’ journey from his formative years and early struggles in the entertainment world, to the explosive success of his most beloved shows between the 1950s and 1980s. Beyond the laughter, the series also reveals the personal challenges and sacrifices Bolaños made in pursuit of artistic fulfillment and international recognition.

The project is helmed by Roberto Gómez Fernández—Bolaños’ son—and director Rodrigo Santos, promising an intimate and authentic portrayal of the legendary comedian. The series blends dramatized scenes with archival material to capture the spirit and soul of a man who defined a comedic era.

Whether you grew up watching El Chavo on Saturday mornings or only recently discovered El Chapulín Colorado through internet clips, Chespirito: Not Really On Purpose offers a nostalgic, emotional, and inspiring look at the genius behind the laughter.
