Mattel’s Día de Muertos Barbies have become a yearly tradition, and each release tends to sell out quickly. Some collectors even display them in the order they were released. This year marks the doll’s eighth version celebrating the holiday.
The 2026 model, designed by Edna Vogel-Amezcua, combines red and black accents and draws inspiration from traditional Mexican ceramics and folk art with pre-Hispanic and colonial roots. It blends clay with unique artisanal techniques.
Last year’s model, designed by Ari Sarinana, featured Barbie in a multi-tiered gown with a cempasúchil flower motif and a matching headpiece. Her face was painted with the calavera makeup typical of the holiday.
Mattel released the first Día de Muertos Barbie in 2019 and has released a new doll every year since, each created in collaboration with a different Mexican designer. Each Barbie comes with a matching Ken doll, and they typically retail for around $80.
According to Mattel, the “Barbie Día De Muertos series honors the customs, symbols and rituals often seen throughout this festive time of remembrance,” and is sure to “become a treasured tradition for your celebration.”
Día de Muertos is a Mexican holiday that typically takes place from Nov. 1 to Nov. 2. During these two days, people create ofrendas, or altars, to honor and remember loved ones who have passed away. The holiday has appeared in movies and TV, including the 2017 Disney film Coco and, more recently, Wednesday Season 2 and My Life with the Walter Boys Season 2.
