New York City is the place that never sleeps, so it makes sense that this summer there are nonstop events that will keep you more than entertained. If you live in the city and are enjoying a relaxing staycation or just planning a visit, these free Latin-focused outdoor events will allow you to experience all the city has to offer for the summer.
Outdoor Concerts with Latin Music
While there are outdoor concerts to meet any musical taste, you’ll still find lots of different options for whatever kind of Latin music you’re into. Spread across all five boroughs, here are some you might want to check out:
July 9, 16, and 23, August 13, and 20, and September 3 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM: Afro-Caribbean performances, Latin jazz, Cuban fusion, and renowned salsa at the Harlem Meer Performance Festival. With various performance art forms, this festival is the perfect way to spend your (free!) Sunday fundays in Central Park at the Charles A. Dana Discovery Center (110th Street between Lenox and Fifth Avenues).
July 12, 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM: Salsa Warriors at the Unisphere in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Queens. Here you’ll find salsa with a twist with both traditional and innovative 21st century styles.
July 13, 7:30 PM – 9:00 PM: Gloria Estefan Tribute in Forest Park (at Woodhaven Boulevard and Forest Park Drive) in Queens. You can hear the Nikki Torres & Rhythm Machine Band for a free and open-air alternative to Broadway’s On Your Feet!
July 29, 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM: Latin Swing at Clement Clarke Moore Homestead Park (Elmhurst Ave. stop) in Queens. Oquesta Afinke’s Peruvian-inspired style of Latin jazz will open your ears to styles of Latin jazz that you haven’t heard before.

Movies and Theater
Running through Fall 2017: Cinderella ditches the ball for Carnaval in Cinderella Samba to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Brazil’s iconic style of music and dance. With outdoor performances through the fall, be sure to bring along the kids for a fun family activity where they can still learn about Brazil’s history. There are free shows almost daily throughout the rest of the summer—check out the NYC Parks website for the show’s lineup.
Every Thursday until August 10, 12:30 PM – 1:30 AM: Broadway in Bryant Park. Check these shows out if you want to listen and sing along to your favorite Broadway shows like Wicked, Phantom of the Opera, and Waitress.
August 20, 8:00 – 10:10 PM: Motorcycle Diaries at Field 42 in Randall’s Island Park. If you haven’t seen this, it’s one of my fave movies where you’ll follow this Latin American journey and learn about the more tender side of the controversial revolutionary Che Guevara. The book is also worth a read if you haven’t checked it out yet.wp_*posts
Get On Your Feet!
Daily through August 29: Waterfront Workouts at Brooklyn Bridge Park. If you’re looking to actually move along to your favorite Broadway jams, Hip Hop, or Zumba, these workout routines are for you. It’s a great way to switch up your workout routine while getting great views of the Brooklyn Bridge.
