Earlier this week, HBO Latino in partnership with Sony Music Latin invited us to Pedro Capó’s launch party at La Marina Lounge in New York City to promote his new album and concert special: En Letra de Otro. 10 years after his debut album, Fuego y Amor, Pedro has been busy with his acting career—most recently with his series Guerra de Idólos on Telemundo. Not to mention a full time family man, married to wife Jessica Rodriguez for 18 years with three children. But with En Letra de Otro he goes back to his roots as a musician.
The concept of the project is simple: performing songs previously released by other artists. But Capó takes this to the next level, and really reinvents the songs. The songs may be “the lyrics of others,” but it’s his own voice and interpretation. The sounds stem from the Latin pop artists he admired from the 90s, and he finds a new way to connect with the lyrics that he hadn’t necessarily considered before as he was growing as a singer-songwriter himself. Pedro even traveled to Mexico — where Latin pop was at its height in the 90s — to channel the energy of his favorite artists and really get behind the lyrics.
With songs from Selena, Chayanne, Fey, and Calle 13, you’re sure to hear some of your fave throwbacks in Pedro’s concert special. But be prepared to be surprised. He has leveraged different musical genres and added his own sabor to the songs to encourage the audience to re-think the songs and find new meaning in them. Think: 90s roots meets 2017 innovation. His rendition of “Amor Prohibido” will bring back those memories of when you first heard Selena perform it, though his take on it with a poppy rock edge infuses a new style and rhythm into this timeless 90s classic.
We got a sneak peak of the concert earlier this week live from La Marina in New York City, but the special launches tonight (August 11) on HBO Latino. It’s also available on HBO GO! and HBO Now; and the album is available on Spotify and iTunes. And if you haven’t seen them yet, be sure to check out the other concert specials HBO Latino has launched for stars like Juanes, Carlos Santana, and Victor Manuelle.
