Becky G has had quite a year, her song “Mayores” surpassed Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” on YouTube. She Hosted the Latin AMA’s alongside Diego Boneta, she landed a role in Lionsgate’s anticipated Saban’s Power Rangers film, and she just announced her Spanish album is set to drop in 2018.

At last night’s iHeartRadio concert in Burbank, California – Becky revealed that before recording her upcoming Spanish album she felt less secure about her path as an artist. In an onstage interview she spoke candidly about what this album meant to her. “When I started recording my project in Spanish I felt like I really found myself as an artist,” she confessed. “I kinda wasn’t happy, I was okay, but I wasn’t there yet, and I felt like I wanted to try new things to see what I like and don’t like and when I found this I fell in love.” It’s safe to say that Becky G’s been trying to find her niche since her debut 2014 album, Becky From The Block, which was a nod to Jennifer Lopez’s 2002 hit Jenny From The Block. It seems like she’s been pulled in a lot of directions over the years trying to make an artistic identity stick and it appears that she’s finally found her place though embracing the “Urban/Latino” genre aka Reggaeton.

Since teasing her album at the Latin AMA’s Becky has been quite vocal about dabbling in both English and Spanish speaking worlds. Like many of us Becky found it difficult to fully embrace her heritage and a language that wasn’t fully her own. She told Billboard in a red carpet interview, ”I used to be embarrassed of my Spanish. That’s just the truth. Being born and raised in Inglewood, California, you know I attended English speaking schools, all of my cousins spoke English. My abuelitos were the only ones speaking Spanish. Gracias a dios que ellos – they were strict on me. I’m more proud now. I feel more accepted and I feel I’m a part of this movement.” 2017 was truly the year in which more Latinos found their voices and an even bolder passion for their community, we’re muy excited to have Becky G on board for the ride.
