Tax season is here! Yes, it’s a drag but paying taxes is part of life and there’s no other way around it. However, it’s being reported that Shakira is in the hot seat for apparently not paying taxes. According to the Associated Press, Shakira is being investigated for “possible tax evasion during the three years before she officially moved to Barcelona, Spanish.”

The matter is a bit murky. According to reports, the singer will have to prove when she actually moved to Spain. Currently, the pop star has called Spain home because she has two sons with Spanish soccer player Gerard Pique. It’s official record that Shakira “switched residences in 2015 from the Bahamas to Barcelona.”

However, Spanish tax authorities say Shakira actually lived in Barcelona between 2012 and 2014 and that’s the years in question regarding failing to pay taxes in that country. The situation gets even more complicated because Shakira was involved in another tax scandal just a couple of months ago. A report titled Paradise Papers, shows that Shakira, along with several other high profile celebrities including Justin Timberlake, Nicole Kidman, Madonna, and others several interests related to the world of offshore finance.

Meaning, people move to a certain destination — in this case Bahamas — or acquire property because this country has particular tax laws. In other words, if you have money in this country, there’s a tax incentive.

The whole thing is so complicated but she has already hired a firm to handle the mess. According to The Guardian her lawyer, regarding the Paradise Papers report said that Shakira “fulfils all legal requirements. All of the corresponding information relative to this entity is public and transparent.”

So how much does she owe? E! reports that Shakira is worth more than $200 million, and Spanish media is saying that Shakira could owe as much as tens of millions of dollars in back taxes. Dios mio!
