The Brooklyn Museum’s exhibit Frida Kahlo: Appearances Can Be Deceiving, which runs from Feb. 8 through May 12, is not just for the Frida fans, the art lovers, and culture junkies. It’s also accommodating foodies as well. Alongside the extensive exhibition which is the largest exhibition in 10 years dedicated to Kahlo and includes a combination of her paintings, photographs, films, as well as her personal belongings, there will also be elaborate Mexican foods and drinks that will be available at the museum’s restaurant and bar, The Norm throughout the exhibition run. Can somebody say YUM?
Tequila company Jose Cuervo was one of the exhibition’s sponsors and is offering museum visitors a chance to sip on a series of different authentic Mexican cocktails made using the original and authentic Cuevo recipes from 100% blue agave. Some of these drinks include Cuervo Tradicional Portrait of a Paloma, the Weeping Coconut Margarita, and The Tree of Old Hope, a tequila twist on the classic Old Fashion.
As for the food, Chef Sue Torres has been invited to create special Mexican menus for the exhibit that includes delicious traditional dishes like shrimp flautas, sweet plantain gorditas cakes, and pan-roasted marinated red snapper. A few other Latino chefs that are also being brought into the mix are Carlos and Felipe Arellano of Chela in Park Slope, Justin Bazdarich of Oxomoco in Greenpoint, TJ Steele of Claro in Gowanus, and Natalia Mendez of La Morada in Mott Haven, in the Bronx.
In other words, if you were thinking of stopping by a nearby Mexican restaurant the day you go to check out the exhibition — now you know you don’t have to. There’ll be plenty of authentic Mexican bites and drinks for you to enjoy. In fact, you might want to bring a foodie friend or two!
