Jennifer Lopez is teaming up with smothering hot Colombian singer Maluma in the upcoming romantic comedy, Marry Me. Described as Notting Hill meets The Proposal, J.Lo’s character will play a pop star who discovers her rock star fiancé, played by Maluma, is cheating on her moments before they tie the knot.
Marry Me will also star Owen Wilson (who will play J.Lo’s new love interest) and it marks Maluma’s big-screen acting debut alongside J.Lo. No further details have been released about the romantic comedy but Deadline reports that production for Marry Me will begin in October in New York.
J.Lo has starred in her fair share of romantic comedies including Maid in Manhattan and Monster in Law though it’s still rare to see Latinx actors in both starring roles, let alone a Latina in a lead role. Nevertheless, the Boricua actress and singer continues to represent for the Latinx community in Hollywood, considering she’s one of the few who has starred in major films. According to Women and Hollywood, only four percent of major female characters in films were Latina in 2017.
Meanwhile, the 25-year-old Colombian singer has been breaking into the U.S. music and entertainment scene most recently with “Medellín” — a song off his 11:11 album featuring the iconic Madonna. He also released a YouTube documentary entitled, Maluma: Lo Que Era, Lo Que Soy, Lo Que Sere and will be on tour this fall.
It sounds like Maluma has also previously expressed his interest in taking on acting gigs as well. “I would love to [act]. It’s just that everything comes at its moment,” he told ET. “Then, with God’s help, I will look for opportunities to act. But if I do it, I would want to do something big. To do something in Hollywood, something that represents a big movement. At the moment, I’m focused on my musical career.”
Maluma has also expressed his admiration for the legendary J.Lo, telling MTV News: “She deserves everything, she’s been in the game for a long time and she’s one of my idols. She’s one of my examples. For her to take Latin music around the world. She’s great.” J.Lo is currently on tour and promoting her upcoming film, Hustlers — co-starring Cardi B and Constance Wu.
We can’t wait to see what magic J.Lo and Maluma bring together onto the big-screen with Marry Me. Stay tuned!
