Colombia Threatens to Sue Retailer Over Offensive Cocaine Holiday Sweater

At first glance, all you see is a creepy Christmas sweater. Nothing wrong with an ugly Christmas sweater — in fact, that’s what many holiday parties are made for. But government officials in Colombia are threatening to sue Walmart for this outrages and offensive oversight that goes beyond a silly sweater.

People get a kick out of showing off ridiculous holiday sweaters, and this particular one, sold at Walmart, looks to fit the bill. Except, upon further inspection, this sweater is a tackier than most. It shows a weird-looking snowman in a Santa suit with three lines of something white. All it says is: “Let It Snow.” Shoppers confused by this sweater would understand it more clearly after reading the description.

“We all know how snow works. It’s white, powdery, and the best snow comes straight from South America. That’s bad news for jolly old St. Nick, who lives far away in the North Pole. That’s why Santa really likes to savor the moment when he gets his hands on some quality, grade A, Colombian snow.” Wow. These sellers sure don’t hide their racist stereotypes. That is why Colombia is yelling foul and could be taking Walmart to court.

“The Walmart sweater is an offense to the country. It generates damage to the legal products of Colombia and damage to the country’s reputation,” Camilo Gómez Alzate, agency director of the National Agency for the Legal Defense of the State of Colombia, told the Spanish newspaper El Tiempo. “Although Walmart apologized, the damage was done.” He added, “Colombia must be respected. What will the family of a person who died in the fight against drug trafficking feel when a firm like Walmart promotes a bag of cocaine from Colombia?”

If Colombia does take Walmart to court, Gómez Alzate said whatever monetary compensation they get from the lawsuit, they would donate the money to “foundations that support the families of members of the police and military forces who were killed or wounded fighting drug trafficking,” the Washington Post reports.

We will have to see where this ends up, but either way, it’s pretty ridiculous that Walmart isn’t paying close attention to the items they’re selling, and the content that is on their website. If they’re that oblivious to what they’re selling, we’re going to inspect their retail items with a fine-tooth comb. For now, we’re just throwing this offensive sweater in the bin titled everything that is wrong about the holidays.
