American Girl have announced that their “2018 Girl of the Year” is a Latina aspiring astronaut named Luciana Vega. The beloved brand that has been releasing cute dolls for the past 30 years (and made a total of $570 million last year) is promoting an intelligent young Latina while also giving Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education a major boost, and we couldn’t be more elated.

The company said that Luciana Vega is of Chilean descent and “is meant to help girls defy gender stereotypes and embrace risks in pursuit of their goals.” American Girl made the official debut of Luciana on “Good Morning America.”

“It is so important to find exciting new ways to inspire our next generation of space explorers,” NASA astronaut Megan McArthur, who serves on the project’s advisory board, said in a statement. “I always want to encourage girls and boys to pursue their dreams, no matter how big, and I think it helps to show how those dreams can become reality for any kid.”

While American Girl has previously released two Latina dolls (one named Josefina and the other Marisol Luna), neither of them spoke to confident and modern young Latina who are eager to learn. Luciana Vega truly is what the young generation is all about.

“We are living in a society that is increasingly technology-focused…a society that is facing complex challenges,” former Chief Scientist of NASA and member of Luciana’s advisory board Dr. Ellen Stofan said in a statement. “If we have only half the population—or slightly less than half the population—trying to figure out how to navigate this increasingly complex world we live in, we’re not going to do as well. We are not going to do as well if we’re not tapping into the talent of everybody.”

We’re just loving Luciana’s sporty outfits too. Check out more of this cute doll here.
