Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably seen Childish Gambino’s “This Is America” video. Donald Glover’s musical alter ego has recently released a music video that is sending waves across the world. Although that may not seem like huge news at first, the powerful video has an insightful take on everything from from gun violence to police brutality to race in America.
Needless to say, the world is flipping out about the music video. Can we even call it a music video or should it be more like a… musical protest? A political work of art? A genius representation of the faults of America and our treatment of black people? A representation of gun violence and the way we turn our backs on lives lost? There is so much more to say about this video, but leave it up to social media to give us some of the most powerful reactions. From Hannah Bronfman saying that it’s “fucking emotional” to oh-so-many dethroning Kanye’s genius for that of Childish Gambino (PREACH!), here are the top 12 reactions to “This is America.”
1. Hannah Bronfman speaks the TRUTH.

2. For those of us still suffering from Kanye news.

3. An interesting analysis.
He plays a Jim Crow caricature that shows plenty of symbolism through subtle nuances & direct distractions by entertaining through Trendy dances and trap lyricism while chaos, violence and death takes place in our direct viewing pic.twitter.com/eBSSlq7v9z

12. Too political? I don’t think so.
#ChildishGambino Stans complaining that he’s getting too political, man he’s always been political, he’s always spoken out about what it’s like as a black face in a white space. People just don’t like the hearing these uncomfortable truths of the black experience. #donaldglover pic.twitter.com/Op0YzNF1pJ

There is no such thing as a public figure being “too political.” Stop trying to silence genius.
